Wie de Italiaanse woordenlijsten al heeft ontdekt (tab boven aan de homepage), begrijpt al dat ik iets heb met het Italiaanse handwerk. Wanneer ik maar de kans heb, koop ik de tijdschriften die je overal in Italië in kiosken te kust en te keur aangeboden ziet. Bladen met kruissteekpatronen, haakwerk, breien, maar ook Richelieu en naaldschilderen.. je vindt er van alles. Eerst kocht ik de bladen als souvenir, of voor de kruissteekpatronen. Later vond ik het spijtig dat ik de tekst niet begreep..

Fast forward enkele jaren... Tijdens de beurs Manidoro in Bellaria introduceerde Anna Castagnetti mij en mijn Marker merklap bij de mensen van Giuliana Ricama, een vooraanstaand blad over borduren en naaldkant. Zij waren zeer onder de indruk van deze voor hen onbekende techniek en vroegen mij iets voor hun blad te bedenken. Tsja.. bedenken valt wel mee, maar je ontwerp dan borduren en afwerken, daar gaat wel wat tijd overheen..

Zo komt het dat afgelopen november een artikel van mijn hand in Giuliana Ricama stond. In het nummer van januari stond een interview dat ik had met Aafke Buurs, een fervent verzamelaarster van borduurwerk, en Nederlandse merklappen in het bijzonder.

Binnenkort breng ik weer enkele dagen door in Italië. Gelukkig ga ik met de auto, zodat ik naar hartelust Italiaanse bladen kan meenemen.. plek zat en geen gewicht restricties!

Wie benieuwd is naar het blad Giuliana Ricama kan hier alle informatie vinden. En - de uitzondering bevestigd de regel, Giuliana vind je alleen in handwerkwinkels..

Italy, but also: Marken

Those who have already discovered the Italian dictionary (tab at the top of the homepage), will have gathered that I enjoy Italian needlework. Whenever I have the chance, I buy the magazines which are available throughout Italy from newsstands such as in the photo. Magazines featuring cross stitch patterns, crochet, knitting, but also Richelieu cutwork and needlepointing. At first I bought the magazines as a souvenir, or for the cross stitch. Later, I regretted not understanding more of the text.

Fast forward some years .. During the needlework fair Manidoro in Bellaria, Anna Castagnetti introduced me and my sampler in Marken embroidery to the staff of Giuliana Ricama, a leading Italian magazine about embroidery and (needle) lace. Impressed with the technique, which for them was hitherto unknown, they asked me to design something suitable for their magazine. Well, the designing part is not so time consuming.. but the execution and finishing needs some time. Hence it took until last November to publish my article in the magazine. In the issue of January, an additional interview was published with Aafke Buurs, a collector of needlework and specifically Dutch samplers.

Shortly I will spend some days in Italy. Luckily I will be by car, so I can bring home all the magazines I want. Lots of space and no weight limits!

Italiaanse woordenlijsten - Italian stichting vocabulary

Bovenaan de homepage zie je tabs met verschillende onderwerpen.  Die met "Italiaanse woordenlijsten bevat vanaf vandaag, dankzij het werk van heel veel vrijwilligers, twee woordenlijsten:

1. Een lijst met foto's van steken en hun Italiaanse naam, vertaald naar het Nederlands, Engels, Frans, Duits en Spaans.
2. Een lijst met termen die je zo al tegen kunt komen als je een Italiaans borduurblad of borduurboek openslaat.

Het zou fijn zijn als iedereen met interesse in Italiaanse handwerken dit zo veel mogelijk deelt.

At the top of the homepage you see various tabs for different topics. The one with "Dictionary Italian stitches and words", as of today, and thanks to the work of many volunteers, will show two lists of translations:

1. A photo list of stitches and their Italian name, translated into Dutch, English, French, German and Spanish.
2. A list with terminology you might encounter reading an Italian stitching magazine or book.

It would be wonderful if everyone who is interested in Italian needlework would share this as much as possible.
